Celebrating learning disabilities

Mayor of Dudley with Barbara Pugh, Lucy and another lady involved in the learning disability service in CookleyA service to celebrate Learning Disability Week was held at Cookley Sports Club on 22 June at 3pm in conjunction with St Peter’s Church. Cookley.

The service began with the Revd Peter Greaves offering a welcome, introduction and opening prayer with the rest of the service then led by Barbara Pugh.

Barbara said:

“The theme of the service was “DO YOU SEE ME” reflecting the reality that people with a learning disability are often ignored, don’t have a voice, and are not valued in society.

“It was brilliant to have Lucy, a young lady with Downs Syndrome offering our first reading as it was important to have someone with a learning disability taking part in the service.”

The address, given by Barbara, was based on a passage from St Matthew’s gospel about people being judged by others who know nothing about that person.

The music for the event was provided by a trio from the local Symphony Orchestra as well as four hymns that were sung during the service. The Mayor of Kidderminster also attended.
