St John’s church in Halesowen, one of our Renewal projects, is looking at ways they can build stronger links with and serve their local community, including the families and students that attend schools close to the church. This week they have launched a post exam calm space specifically for year 11s about to embark on their GCSEs.
Claire Biggs said:
“We know that this time of year can be so stressful for year 11s, so inside church we’re offering hot chocolate, fizzy drinksand donuts and somewhere they can sit and chill following exams or revision. We have put out board games, adult colouring and just left space for chat and friendship. We have also created some gift packs with a motivational pen, prayers, hot chocolate sachet, biscuit and bookmark for all who come to take away with them. We had three students attend the first session which is a start.”
“We opened the doors at home time and had lots of children and some college students passing by and wowing at the inside of the church building they pass every day. The children who came in were grateful, as were the parents who commented later on social media.”
Claire added:
“Alongside our calm space, we are also engaging with the Earls High school Community Focus group who are litter picking our churchyard on Thursday in exchange for squash and biscuits. It’ll be another chance for us to chat and engage with students, this time those in years 7- 9. Our relationship with the school is developing well and more collaborations are planned for the future.”
St John’s is one of our Renewal churches and has received money from the national church as part of our diocesan vision to create flourishing communities in each major area of population, bringing more people to know the love of God.
Claire added:
“Our post exam calm space will be open every Monday afternoon and we hope more students will take up the offer as the exam season gets underway. Our building work will also hopefully be complete soon, which will equip the church with the facilities we need as we plan more opportunities to serve our local community.”
