The Diocesan Church Buildings Team recently visited St John's church in Bromsgrove where works are underway to replace the damaged top section of the spire and restore and repoint the remainder of it.
Climbing 200ft to the top of the scaffold, Mark Carter, Hannah Taylor and Lee Westcott were able to discuss the progress of the works with the church team, architect and contractors, and enjoy the views that stretched from the Malvern Hills up into the Black Country and Birmingham.
Mark said:
"It's a real privilege of the job to be able to visit and get so close to parts of these ancient buildings that have only been seen close-up by very few people in 700 years. The spire of St John's is an iconic landmark in the town and a visible reminder of the presence of the church and faith, but one that needs regular repairs and restoration. It was really useful to be able to discuss the progress of works, including where things haven't necessarily been straightforward, with the design team and contractors - learning that we will be able to take forward into future projects with parishes."
Works are due for completion by November this year and has been made possible through grant funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, National Churches Trust, Garfield Weston Foundation and other national and local grant finders.
