75th Anniversary of VE Day

Published: 9th April 2020

The 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day falls on 8 May this year.

Millions of people took to the streets and pubs to celebrate peace, mourn their loved–ones and to hope for the future, while not forgetting those still in conflict until 15 August when Japan surrendered, ending World War 2 (WW2).

Next weekend, this important time will be commemorated in homes across the world. It is hoped that #VEDay75, an international, public celebration, will take place in August to coincide with Victory over Japan (VJ) day, if lockdown restrictions have been lifted. Both weekends will be opportunities for us all to remember the enormous sacrifices that were made at home and abroad during WW2 and to joyously celebrate the arrival of peace and freedom following 6 years of war.

In light of the current situation, to mark the occasion lone pipers will play the traditional Battle’s O’er, town criers will share a Cry for Peace Around the World from safe and suitable locations, and WW2 veterans will undertake the Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of World War 2.
