Couple repeat wedding with Feckenham CE First School22 May 2018 By Sam Setchell
Two teachers decided to rerun their wedding, so that children from the bride’s school could share in their big day and understand the significance.
Catherine O’Donnell and Matthew Bird were recently married at St John the Baptist Church in Feckenham. Miss O’Donnell has been a teacher at Feckenham CE First School for 15 years and Mr Bird teaches at the ACE Academy in Tipton. In the week after their wedding, they decided to hold the ceremony again as an educational experience for the children at Feckenham School.
The wedding was taken by curate, Gary Crellin. He said:
“There was definitely some cynicism from folk around the village about how the children would be involved and whether the rerun would be a pantomime. However, there was no chance of this - the school provided clear and just reasoning on curriculum grounds and the church and I were only too happy to oblige. The school considered marriage as part of the underpinning values work they do and had a pretty good understanding of love. From my reckoning, over three quarters of the children and half the adults had not been to a church wedding and I think what struck home to those attending was the fact that our church has held hundreds and hundreds of weddings over the centuries. With the help of the bell ringers, some of the choir and our organist, the reprise of the wedding was a splendid affair.”
The school entered into the spirit of the occasion with pages, readings, confetti, bridesmaids and best man and put together a fabulous junior choir who sang a breath-taking anthem. Revd Gary gave a sermon based on the love or not of broccoli and the meaning of real love. It was a joyous occasion enjoyed by all.
