Faith in the No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency
Lunchtime Learning
Speaker: Bishop John (also author of a book on this series)
Starting in 1998 with The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, Alexander McCall Smith has created a much-loved series set in Botswana, with the generous-hearted, mystery solving Precious Ramotswe at the centre of them. The 23rd in the series, A Song of Comfortable Chairs, is published this August. Among the real-life characters who have appeared in them is the then bishop of the diocese, Trevor Mwamba, reflecting the very natural way the heroine’s faith is portrayed throughout this series as she grapples with down-to-earth mysteries and the complexities of life. The books are written in a deceptively simple style that has made them appeal to a very wide range of readers.
As well as being bishop Of Worcester, Bishop John has long been a fan of these books, and has written a book exploring them in dialogue with the Christian faith: Living Love: In Conversation with...the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency (Inspire: 2007). In this lunchtime learning session, he will explore why these books are so enjoyable, and how they offer an attractive engagement with a down-to-earth faith.
