Digital Issues Facing Christians Today

Who’s it for?

For lay and ordained, old and young – anyone who wants to think about how digital and discipleship go together.

What’s it about?

For some people, technology is all good, and for others all bad. Most of us fall somewhere between these extremes. Bishops blog and the Pope tweets (@pontifex). The Diocese of Worcester puts lots of prayer requests and news on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/cofeworcester/). The church has adopted social media as another means of sharing news and faith. But Christians rarely or never have the opportunity to think about how the digital world is changing our lives, perhaps changing some of the ways we live out our faith, perhaps even shaping our beliefs.

This workshop, led by Maggi Savin-Baden, who has spent time researching and thinking about these questions, will help today’s church think about what discipleship might look like in a digital world. Ass well as looking art some of the more general questions around technology, participants will explore how we live wisely with social media and email, how we keep our online and offline identity integrated and protected, and how the growing popularity of digital wills is changing the way some people think about the afterlife.

Who’s the speaker?

Maggi Savin-Baden is Professor of Education at University of Worcester. She has spent over 20 years researching how people learn, and she has published widely in specialist journals as well as writing 17 books, including work on digital fluency and the things that help people learn. She is a Licensed Lay Minister in the Church of England in the Diocese of Coventry, and a member of the Church of England Networked Learning Committee. She is a consultant to the Coventry Diocese on the development of a new Digital learning portal. In her spare time she bakes, runs, rock climbs and attempts triathlons.
