Lunchtime Learning: Changing my Mind with the Bible
Leader: Nikki Groarke
Archdeacon Nikki Groarke has spoken in General Synod about the ways in which she has changed her mind with a deeper reading of Scripture. Nikki says: “I have always believed the Bible to be God’s living word, which both inspires and guides my life. It is both timeless truth, and culturally relevant in each generation, as the Holy Spirit gives us discernment to read, hear and interpret it as God’s word to us today. I read it devotionally, and to inform my practice as a priest and leader in the church, diligently seeking to understand those underpinning elements of doctrine on which the church is built.
“My mind has been changed often as I have wrestled with Scripture, and I hope I will always be willing to learn and grow, with scrupulously diligent study, and humble openness to be proved wrong in my previous assumptions. Early on in my Christian journey my understanding of what the Bible says about women in leadership underwent a significant change. More recently this is happening as I struggle to discern what it says about issues of human sexuality. “
