Lunchtime Learning - Reading While Black

Date and Time :
15th February 2023 - 12:30pm - 1:30pm

Speaker: Foluso Enwerem

Foluso Enwerem is serving as a Curate at Top Church, Dudley. As a black British woman of Yoruba heritage, with enriching experiences of living and working cross-culturally and inter-culturally in different contexts, Foluso will help us explore what ‘reading while black’ enables us to notice differently as we read the Bible together.

She will introduce  Esau McCaulley’s book Reading While Black. McCaulley says “We have had to wrestle with the text like Jacob until the text delivered its blessing.” Through reading a familiar Bible passage, we will see how ‘reading while black’ serves as an invitation to pay careful attention to where and how we instinctively position ourselves in the biblical narrative. “Reading while black” helps us to see how the Bible speaks into challenges in the British context without losing hope.
