Exploring St Matthew’s Gospel - in-person

Date and Time :
9th November 2022 - 10:00am - 1:00pm
Categories:

This workshop is open to all who preach, clergy as well as Readers. In Advent 2022, the Church again starts the lectionary three-year cycle with Year A – the year of Matthew.

Matthew has been seen both as the most Jewish gospel, in its emphasis on law, prophecy and fulfilment, and equally as one which has nurtured Christian antisemitism – in its regular denigration of the scribes and Pharisees, or in its notorious depiction of the crowds shouting “his blood be on us and our children.” Part of this workshop’s exploration of the gospel will try to tackle some of those questions head-on.

This is a practitioner-led, rather than expert-led workshop, and Doug Chaplin, Discipleship and Lay Training Officer, will reflect with those attending on Matthew as someone seeking to preach on it in ways informed by recent trends in biblical criticism, but addressing the contexts in which we read scripture to inform our individual and corporate following of Jesus today. What are some of the emphases Matthew brings to our relationship with Jesus that we can to draw out in our preaching through the coming year?

The workshop will have a mix of input and discussion, as we also share our own insights and experience with one another.

An event taking place in-person, and later on Zoom.
