Recently, the sound of Halesowen’s bells carried more than just music across the town – they carried 250 years of history.
On Sunday 7 June, ringers marked the 250th anniversary of the first recorded peal on the Halesowen bells with a full band ringing a complete peal of Grandsire Doubles. The peal took three hours and one minute to complete.
This remarkable achievement honoured the generations of ringers who have kept this unique tradition alive, linking the present day with those who first rang these bells a quarter of a millennium ago.
Mike Brown, tower captain who rang in the peel said:
"We were delighted with this peal which is a tribute to the enthusiasm of the whole band and with the peal ringers being aged between 12 and 67 shows how ringing is an activity for all ages.”
The mum of one of the ringers posted about the peal on Facebook. She said:
“For those who heard the glorious ringing echoing across the town, you were listening to a living piece of Halesowen’s heritage. Congratulations and thanks to all the ringers whose dedication, skill and commitment made this memorable anniversary celebration possible. Here’s to preserving and celebrating our local traditions for generations to come.”
