An article for June editions of parish magazines, from the Archdeacon of Worcester, Mark Badger.
During June, Archdeacon Nikki and I will have the privilege of meeting with churchwardens from across our parishes as we undertake the annual visitations. These are always encouraging occasions, offering a chance to hear something of the life of each place, to give thanks for all that is offered in service, and to recognise the vital ministry of churchwardens at the heart of parish life. They culminate in the formal admission of wardens, but what stands behind that moment is a deep commitment to serve Christ and his Church faithfully in each community.
As I prepare for these gatherings, I find myself holding before me Bishop Hugh’s call to us all, lay and ordained alike, that above all we are to be faithful, learning to love God faith‑fully.
Faithfully, because the Christian life is shaped by steady commitment: in prayer, in worship, in service, and in love of neighbour. Across our diocese, I am constantly encouraged by the quiet, faithful witness of so many, often unseen, but deeply significant.
Faith‑fully, because God invites us to a life that is rich and whole. This is not a narrow or partial calling, but one that touches every part of who we are and how we live, at home, in our communities, and across the generations.
As we gather for the Archdeacons' Visitations, I give thanks for all who serve. May this be a season not only of duty fulfilled, but of faith renewed, that together we may live more deeply, more joyfully, and more fully in Christ.
Mark
