A new Chaplain for Bishop Hugh

Head and shoulders picture of Fiona GreenBishop Hugh has appointed the Revd Fiona Green to be his new Chaplain. Fiona is currently Vice Principal, Dean of Lay Ministry, and Safeguarding Lead at Ridley Hall Theological College in Cambridge. She will move to Worcester to take up the role supporting Bishop Hugh in January.

Fiona was ordained in 2005 and has worked at Ridley Hall since 2019. Prior to this, Fiona served in the Stepney Episcopal Area of the London Diocese, first in parish ministry in north London and then in the heart of the East End.  She subsequently went on to serve as Stepney Intern Director and Assistant Area Director of Ordinands.

Before ordination, Fiona spent 12 years working as a civil and structural engineer in England, Ireland and Australia before sensing a call to work for an ecumenical charity in St Petersburg, Russia.  There she was involved in capacity building for a wide range of church social projects, culminating in the development of an HIV/Aids project for young people in North-West Russia. It was this experience that led her to return to Cambridge, her home town, initially to study theology as an independent student and then to train for ordination.

Fiona said:

“It has been a great privilege to work with the Principal and staff at Ridley Hall over the past seven years, helping to shape how we equip our ordinands and lay ministry students for mission and ministry for the twenty-first century church. It is this experience, together with my previous work in both parish and diocesan contexts, that has led to a sense of call to this new role of Bishop’s chaplain. I am very much looking forward to supporting Bishop Hugh to lead and to serve the Diocese of Worcester in this way.”

The Bishop’s Chaplain has a crucial role in supporting Bishop Hugh to lead and serve the Diocese of Worcester as its bishop. Fiona will act as a confidant to Bishop Hugh and will lead the work of the Bishops’ Office, nurturing a faithful, hopeful and loving culture within the office and the wider diocese. She will also be a key point of connection between clergy and the Bishop.

Bishop Hugh said:

“I am delighted that Fiona will be joining me and the team at the Bishop’s Office. The interview panel were very impressed by her broad experience, her evident love for the church and her sense of calling to the role. She is exactly the steady, wise and faith-filled person that I need to support me, and I am looking forward to welcoming her to the Diocese in the New Year. Please keep Fiona in your prayers as she prepares to move”

Fiona studied engineering at Cambridge University and went on to qualify as a Chartered Engineer and to become a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. She returned to Cambridge to train for ordained ministry at Ridley Hall and has a postgraduate diploma in Pastoral Theology from Anglia Ruskin University. She recently completed a three-year course in Ignatian Spirituality at the London Centre for Spiritual Direction.
