Margaret James to become National Director of SIAMS

Published: 15th March 2021

Margaret James, our Diocesan Director of Education has been appointed as the National Director of SIAMS for the Church of England. Her appointment is one of two new roles within the Church’s National Education Team who will lead the new framework for Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) coming into effect from September 2021.

All Church of England and Methodist schools receive SIAMS inspections which focus on the impact of the Church school's Christian vision on pupils and adults. This is in addition to the schools’ Ofsted inspections. The changes to how SIAMS operates will mean that the national church can assure the quality and consistency of the inspections across the whole country and operate more efficiently to deliver the inspection, administrative and training elements of the process.

Margaret said: “I am delighted to have been asked to lead the Church of England’s new nationally integrated school inspection system. SIAMS has a crucial role to play in the life of all Church schools and it is an honour to be able to take its work forward at this seminal moment in time. Working with Church schools in Dudley and Worcestershire, as well as with other partners across the diocese, for the last five years has been a privilege. I will miss being part of this but I am pleased that we will still be sharing together in the Church’s vision for the flourishing of children, young people, and adults.”

Margaret has been our Diocesan Director of Education since 2016, having previously worked as a primary school teacher, local authority adviser and Church school leader, before becoming SIAMS Manager for the Dioceses of Gloucester and Worcester. In 2018, she was awarded a Doctorate in Education having conducted the only doctoral level research into SIAMS inspection.

Bishop John said: “Margaret has done a wonderful job as director of education. Her skill, commitment and sheer hard work are greatly appreciated. Much progress has been made in the development of our church schools during her tenure and she will be greatly missed. Though sad to see her go, we can bask in reflected glory as a result of her appointment to this very significant national role. We offer her our grateful thanks and pray for God’s blessing on her as she takes it up.”

Margaret will be leaving the Diocese in May to start her new role on 1 June.
