Celebrating Easter in our parishes

Published: 31st March 2021

Parishes across Worcestershire and Dudley are preparing to celebrate Easter with events both online and outside this weekend.  Here are a few of the things happening:

Hanley Swan and Hanley Castle Churches are hosting an exhibition paintings depicting the Stations of the Cross by local artist Sara Haywood. See this contemporary version of Christ’s final hours by visiting both churches from 30 March – 11 April or on the parish website. See when the churches are open.

St Peter’s Church in Cradley has a life-size, interactive trail for families to follow around the churchyard. A local craftsman and artists have made handcrafted figures from the Easter story and each one tells a different part of Jesus’s life before his death and resurrection. Families can scan a QR code to watch a short video about the station and describe the story. There are seven stations to visit in total and the trail runs from 1 – 11 April. Find out more about the trail and St Peter’s other Easter events.

The parish of Teme Valley South has blessed palm crosses which can be collected from their churches. Each church has been making crosses and on the afternoon of Good Friday, these will come from each of the seven churches to the rectory garden where there will be a short service at 3pm. There will be a moment of silence to mark the symbolic moment of the crosses coming together and the stories behind these crosses will be told as part of the service. They will then travel on to Stanford for the dawn service to bring in the first light of Easter Sunday before going back out to four different churches across the area where there will be a 10am service. More details on the Teme Valley South website.

St Peter’s Church in Pedmore, Stourbridge has put together a 1.5km Easter treasure trail for the whole family, with a prize for every participant. Starting and ending at the church, you can follow the eggs as you journey through Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. There are questions to answer along the way.  Available from Friday 2 – Monday 5 April, a trail booklet and more information is available on St Peter’s website.

St Barnabas Church in Worcester have created a prayer labyrinth using spray paint on the green next door to the church. Vicar Julieann Watson is hoping that lots of people will make use of it during Holy Week. She said: "we have posted information so that following the labyrinth should be self-explanatory. There is a chance to take into it both your griefs and hopes."
