Work in Parishes

Community and Lifelong Learning - Background

The Community and Lifelong Learning Committee is an initiative of the Board of Education, the Board of Social, Economic and Local Development and the Department of Ministry, Training and Discipleship in the diocese of Worcester. It is accountable to the Board of Education.

Parameters

The work of the Committee is channelled through the Director of Education, the Social Responsibility Officer, the Director of Development and Worcestershire Industrial Mission. Initial contacts and mailings should be to the Diocesan Director of Education on dmorphy@cofe-worcester.org.uk

Scope

The Committee seeks to keep a watching brief on and to provide critical appraisal of developments in lifelong and community learning in the area covered by the diocese of Worcester in association with the Saltley Trust and partner dioceses of Coventry, Lichfield, Hereford and Birmingham. The area covered includes Advantage West Midlands, Learning and Skills Councils in Hereford and Worcester and the Black Country, Lifelong Learning Partnerships and institutional and community providers.

Method of Working

The Committee is Chaired by the Archdeacon of Worcester, the Ven. Dr. Joy Tetley. The officers of the Committee are the Revd David Morphy

Membership: Three members from the Board of Education; Co-opted members - up to 4 - including a representative each from Worcestershire Industrial Mission and from Chaplains at Tertiary level.

Aim

To encourage, support, monitor and evaluate the Church's contribution to Community and Life Long Learning in the diocese.

Objectives

In relation to Community and Life Long Learning we seek:

  • To promote Community and Life Long Learning which delivers personal, community and economic development for all.
  • To encourage and develop parish participation and partnership.
  • To support all who deliver and promote provision of opportunities.
  • To build and promote links and partnerships with agencies including Life Long Learning Partnerships and Learning and Skills Councils.
  • To provide an educational and theological critique.
  • To bring educational and theological insights to bear on policies and provision.
  • To support chaplains and staff in Further and Higher Education.
  • To advise the Board of Education and relevant Diocesan bodies.
  • To consult with other West Midlands dioceses.
  • To consult with national Church bodies and officers.

The Board of Education is also responsible for supporting work in parishes and in the community with children and young people. This work is supported through the Children's and Youth Sub Committee and carried out by Lesley Towey - Children's Officer and Steve Martin - Youth Officer. For full details of this work please see:
