Demons and spirits

The experience of feeling oppressed by spirits or demons is truly troubling and frightening. Discerning the true nature of the experience cannot be undertaken without both psychiatric and spiritual assessment. Those who feel so afflicted may be reluctant to submit themselves either to a psychiatrist or to a priest let alone both. Often it is a close relative who seeks help on their behalf.

Forms of mental illness may present as demon possession. True possession is extremely rare and does not arise without some history of involvement with the occult. Those experiencing mental illness may benefit from spiritual as well as psychiatric support.

Spiritual health warning

Some well intentioned religious groups as well as those in Christian ministry may identify demons or evil spirits and perform exorcisms without proper investigation. Exorcism is dangerous if conducted without proper authority. This does not mean that sensitively worded prayers will not be helpful in bringing a measure of God's peace, so long as it is clear that this is not an exorcism. Your Church of England Parish Priest is available to help you get appropriate support and advice.
