Authorised Lay Ministry

Lay ministry comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes in the parishes, and there are many local ministry teams of one kind or another in a variety of settings. The Authorised Lay Ministry Programme is a one-year course of common and specialist modules which will enable many more people to offer their time and talents within their parish. Authorisation will be given by the Bishop at a celebration in the cathedral, alongside the home team, and this will include a certificate, time-limited to five years, specific to parish and under the authority of the incumbent.

Bishop's Certificate Course

A course designed to help you learn more about worship, scripture and history, and help you to relate your Christian faith to your life and locality. It will also build you up and encourage you in your faith as you work together in a group.

Vocations Programme

'Who am I?' 'What am I here for?' 'Where am I going?' are big questions that people ask at many different times in their lives. Do you have gifts for ministry? Is now the moment when God is calling you to use your gifts in a new way? The Vocations Programme is open to everybody as a vocation to authorised ministry is only part of the vocation that all Christians share, to be faithful to our Lord

Reader Training

  • Reader Initial Training: Once you have been selected for training, this course lasts for two years. We seek to give you some firm foundations for future learning, and a basic toolkit for reader ministry. People enter training with a wide variety of educational backgrounds, and often those who left school at sixteen and those who are university graduates find themselves learning with and from each other. The course is designed to work with people where they are, and everyone should feel themselves enabled, challenged and encouraged through it.

  • Reader Continuing Ministerial Development: All Readers are strongly encouraged to take part in some continuing study and updating, or extension of, skills annually, to complement and support their programme of personal and spiritual development. The Readers’ Board offers a series of opportunities which touch on six key areas each year. Training for Funeral Ministry, in order to receive the Bishop’s permission to officiate at funeral services, forms a separate course each year and is available, with the support of their parish priest, to Readers who have been licensed for at least one year.

Clergy Training

  • The IMD (Initial Ministerial Development) programme continues the process of equipping the newly ordained for a lifetime of service within the Church of England.  It is an important transitional period of coming to terms with the responsibilities and challenges of a public representative ministry.

  • CMD (Continuing Ministerial Development):  As in all other forms of ministry there is a need and a desire amongst clergy for continual refreshment and within the region and beyond  there are many opportunities to access courses and training.
  • CMD Programme for 2010
  • The emerging Regional Training Partnership (RTP) will be a source of renewal for the clergy of the West Midlands too.
