The Board of Education

Bromsgrove representative - Phil Mitchell

I have recently taken early retirement from headship (31.08.06) to maintain a part-time involvement in Education. I am an accredited School Improvement Partner, currently working with three Middle schools on the Isle of Wight.

I was Headteacher of Ipsley C.E. Middle School from its formation in September, 2001 as part of the LEA reorganisation of schools in Redditch.

Ipsley is a large 9-13 Middle school, currently with 640 pupils, which is committed to raising pupil achievement.

Much of my early role was involved with the formation of a new school, with building an effective team and with building trust in a community much affected by school closures. OFSTED ( 2003) recognised the school’s capacity for improvement and the very good leadership of the headteacher. During the past 12 months the school has gained accreditation by ‘Investors-in-People’ and ‘ArtsMark’ (Silver).

The school is recognised for its capacity to embrace and develop educational initiatives and has taken a key role in LEA ‘Able, Gifted and Talented’ and ‘Collaborative Talking/Thinking’ projects. I have overseen significant ICT development and the school is recognised as a providing leading practice in Technology.

I am member of the Diocesan Board of Education for the Worcester Diocese, with whom I trained as a Church School Inspector in November, 2006.

I have taken a lead role in the management and leadership of a Pyramid Learning Network.

Previously I was Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher of St. Peter’s C.E. Middle, Redditch (4 years and 20 years, respectively) and in a former middle school held roles of Year Leader and Head of English. In all I have 37 years experience in education.

My expertise covers all aspects of school leadership and management. I have a reputation as a team-builder, for inclusion and for the high quality of pastoral care in my schools. I have a strong commitment to improving the quality of learning for all pupils.

I am concerned to keep the interests of children at the centre of my work: within a Christian context to encourage enjoyment in learning, to value the importance of relationships and of the pastoral role of teachers, and to encourage learning beyond the classroom.
