I first became a school governor in 1971 at my children’s school in London and until retirement in 2004 had been governor in 8 schools, CofE and state, being chair of governors on 5 occasions.
I have run 3 playgroups, worked as a teaching aid in 3 schools, including a school for the deaf, and St Lukes, Canning Town – a very tough Dockland primary school. As a curate I established a number of children’s clubs and have run a very considerable number of church based holiday clubs etc and I have organised children’s holidays. I have taken collective worship and been involved in RE in schools since 1988.
In Derby Diocese, my team had 9 primary schools, 1 secondary and 1 special school, to which I was chaplain. I took almost daily acts of worship in one or other school and was involved in RE in several, including the special school where I worked alongside a member of staff planning and establishing the RE syllabus in the school. I was a member of Derby DBE and was briefly involved in RE inspection in the Diocese – briefly because of the acute pressures of other work.
I have been involved in the appointing of 5 heads, numerous deputies and other staff and seen two schools out of special measures. I have been chair of governors at St Clements CofE since 2006.
As a disadvantaged child, my particular concern is how similar children access education and I am an ardent supporter of the Every Child Matters agenda.
