AND EDUCATION

The Revd Andrew Wickens

Dudley Education Chaplain
Picture of Andrew Wickens

I serve as an officer of the DBE with particular responsibility within Dudley Borough. The post is part-time, since I am in addition Priest-in-Charge at St James’s, Dudley. As Education Chaplain I offer particular support to church schools in the Local Authority, through governor support, headteacher visits, collective worship and R.E. I help schools reflect upon their Christian distinctiveness in line with the SIAS framework and promote SMSCD and community cohesion within schools.

Within the LA, I serve on Dudley S.A.C.R.E., the Dudley Select Committee on Children’s Services and until recently have been a member of the Schools Organisation Committee. I chair the Education Committee of the Dudley Borough Churches Forum which seeks to develop the Every Child Matters agenda in the faith sector. I am a Director of the Dudley based Centre for Equality & Diversity.  I also serve within the Diocese on the Africa Task Group

Previously I spent eight years in Africa – four years with CMS in Kenya as a staff member of St Paul’s, Limuru in full-time theological education. This followed service in Zambia with USPG as trainer and priest. From my title parish (Birchfield, Birmingham) onwards, I have undertaken ministry within a markedly multicultural and multi-faith context. Before taking up my present post with the DBE, my main experience of schools was prior to ordination when I spent three years teaching secondary science, having a background in physics.
