St Martin in the Cornmarket churchyardTheaward will help restore sight lines from the historic Cornmarket and create directpedestrian access to the churchyard, which is set to become a garden for thecommunity, conserve churchyard walls dating back to 1796, save a Victorianbothy in danger of collapse and create an interpretation scheme that will tellthe story of St Martins significant place in city history.

The Revd Dr Colin Butler, Vicar of StMartin said, Hundreds of people, every day walk within a few yards of thegrounds of the church, on their way to the shops or to work, but arent reallyaware of the remarkable heritage that is just a few feet away, within the groundsof St Martin, just waiting to be discovered. Thanks to the help of the National Lottery Heritage Fund, we will now beable to tell some of the wonderful historical stories the whole site contains, including how the church may have played a part in William Shakespearesmarriage to Anne Hathaway.

Work on the scheme will start shortlyafter Christmas and the church is appealing for people to get in touch, whowould like to take part in community archaeology or help with some of thenature/environmental studies that will all form part of the project. To take part call 01905 25952 or visit http://stmartininthecornmarket.co.uk/index.php/contact-us/
