The Venerable Dr Joy Tetley, Archdeacon of Worcester, has been honoured with a Fellowship of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA). Fellows of the RSA are appointed by invitation only and must have both a record of achievement and an ability to make a difference through their professional position and their intellectual or creative ability.
The RSA was founded in 1754 by William Shipley, a painter and social activist, on a manifesto "to embolden enterprise, enlarge science, refine arts, improve our manufactures and extend our commerce". It encourages the development of a principled, prosperous society through a programme of projects and events and has launched a new manifesto for the 21st century to seek solutions to five major challenges: encouraging enterprise; moving towards a zero waste society; fostering resilient communities; developing a capable population; and advancing global citizenship.
On being awarded her fellowship, Archdeacon Joy said: “This was an unexpected honour. Many of the aims and goals of the RSA are very dear to my own heart and I am looking forward to engaging creatively and actively with them through my work in the diocese and beyond. In particular, I have a strong commitment to seeking to help people and communities to flourish and develop their potential.”
The RSA Fellowship comprises of professionals from all walks of life worldwide, who are encouraged to continue the RSA's tradition of principled and practical inquiry. They form a network of people from many disciplines committed to exploring ways of fostering the well-being of humankind and the earth.
