The Revd Georgina Byrne will be licensed in Worcester Cathedral on Sunday September 13th at 4pm.  She will be taking on the dual role of Diocesan Director of Ordinands and Residentiary Canon of the Cathedral, as well as continuing her work as the Dean of Women’s Ministry for the Diocese of Worcester.

Georgina said “I'm looking forward to my new role as Director of Ordinands, where I'll be working with a wide variety of people who are exploring a sense of calling to ordained ministry. I'm particularly pleased to be combining this role with that of Residentiary Canon at Worcester Cathedral, and becoming part of a team that keeps the cathedral such a welcoming place of worship and prayer.”

As Director of Ordinands, Georgina will work with those individuals who are considering or who have already started the journey towards becoming a minister in the Church of England. This involves nurturing people who may be making their first enquiry, right through to those completing their first four years in ordained ministry as a curate in a parish. Becoming a member of the clergy is a life-changing decision and Georgina will have a key role to play in ensuring the candidates and their families are properly supported and advised during this time.

Georgina will also be the third Residentiary Canon of Worcester Cathedral and part of the Chapter, which is the governing body in the cathedral. She will work closely with the Dean, the other Residentiary Canons (Alvyn Pettersen, Canon Theologian, and David Stanton, Precentor) and two lay Canons to ensure that the cathedral remains welcoming to all those who visit and a special place where people can find and worship God.

The Dean of Worcester said, “The Cathedral Chapter and Community are delighted to welcome Georgina as a Residentiary Canon, and we are delighted too to welcome Georgina and Tim as residents of College Green.  We look forward to Georgina’s contribution to the life of the Cathedral. Her dual role as Residentiary Canon and Diocesan Director of Ordinands will further strengthen the bonds between the Cathedral and the rest of the diocese”.

Bishop John said “The Revd Georgina Byrne is an extremely able priest and I greatly look forward to working with her in her new role as Diocesan Director of Ordinands. She will have much wisdom to offer those considering Christian ministry and those newly exercising it. She will also bring much to her role as Canon of the Cathedral”.

ENDS.

The Diocese of Worcester is one of 44 dioceses in the Church of England. It covers an area of 671 square miles and includes parishes in the County of Worcestershire, the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley, and a few parishes in northern Gloucestershire, south east Wolverhampton and Sandwell.
