His Royal Highness, The Duke of Gloucester was formally installed as the University of Worcester’s Founding Chancellor at a ceremony at Worcester Cathedral on Thursday, April 10. The Queen’s cousin processed from the Guildhall to the Cathedral in his official robes along with a colourful procession of University of Worcester staff in their academic gowns. He was welcomed at the Installation event by the Bishop of Worcester, the Rt Revd Dr John Inge, the Dean of Worcester, the Very Revd Peter Atkinson, and University of Worcester Vice Chancellor, Professor David Green. Speaking on his official acceptance of the role of Chancellor, His Royal Highness said; “These are exciting positive times for the University, the City of Worcester and the wider region. I hope that the current and continuing capital developments will bring a wealth of educational, cultural and economic benefits to the region”. The Bishop of Worcester commented ‘I am delighted that His Royal Highness, The Duke of Gloucester, has been installed as the first Chancellor of Worcester University. The university makes an increasingly important contribution to higher education and his will be a great encouragement. From earliest times the Church has sponsored and enabled education in this country and I am very pleased to be part of that ongoing tradition, now set within the hospitality of this landmark ceremony taking place at the Cathedral.’ ENDS The Diocese of Worcester is one of 44 dioceses in the Church of England.
