Uncertainty and Trust
No sooner had they told us, a few weeks ago, to expect ‘the coldest winter in living memory', than a thaw came and it turned milder!
Well, you expect the weather to be unpredictable, but then we heard that the economic forecast had to be revised. That makes us a bit suspicious, of course; but the truth is that the one certain thing is uncertainty. Or so we often say.
But as we think further we all know, we find that's altogether too cynical: our lives are built on trust, especially the people we trust.
At the start of the year, when we are especially aware of the uncertainties ahead, it's worth taking a moment to remember those vital relationships of trust, the people we trust and those who trust us. And then, if you are a person of faith, it's a time to refresh your trust in God, the one who is firmly with you in all the uncertainties of 2006.
Have a happy and trustful New Year.
The Rt Revd Dr Peter Selby
