More than 1200 children from across the Diocese of Worcester will pack into Worcester Cathedral over the two days of the 19th and 20th of October. They’ll be participating in a spirituality project designed to make Religious Education ‘come alive’.
Coinciding with One World Week, 38 primary schools will be represented at the ‘Sing World’ event. It’s the fourth annual Music Celebration organised by the Worcester Diocesan Board of Education and offers the opportunity for schools to celebrate Global Christianity and address issues of poverty, hunger and justice through music, dance and drama.
“These music festivals began after teachers approached us for resources on making Religious Education more exciting,” says key organiser, RE and Schools Spirituality Adviser, Mrs Pat Wheeler. “Events like this really do inspire awe and wonder amongst the children and gives a certain energy to the teachers to impart in the classroom long after the moment has ended,” Mrs Wheeler added.
With global issues at the heart of ‘Sing World’, children will be given the chance to grow culturally as well as spiritually. They will sing songs from around the world, in English and Spanish and explore the concepts of peace, justice, poverty and hunger, as well as chaos and destruction.
“It’s important that children learn how to make sense of the world around them,” continues Mrs Wheeler. “Images of death and starvation for example, that they see on the television everyday are often hard to come to terms with but the words of a song can have a powerful message and help children develop an awareness and understanding of global concerns.”
The children will be conducted by Geoff Weaver and work with professional musicians. Pupils from Dyson Perrins High School will contribute through dance and drama and African Drummers will also accompany the massive ephemeral choir at various key stages of the performance. Participants have also designed and made crosses that reflect different cultures, which will be used as part of the performance.
“The support for this years celebration has been staggering,” said Director of Education, Revd David Morphy. “It’s wonderful that from a seed sown to support religious education in schools, an event has evolved to touch so many people, especially children. We hope they enjoy their experience and that it helps them grow musically and spiritually.”
