The Bishop of Hereford, the Rt Revd Anthony Priddis, issued this statement:
“I am greatly shocked by the tragic and terrible news of the murder of Brother Roger. He has been an inspiration for millions. The Community of Taizé is a beacon of light, reconciliation and holiness in a troubled world – and this is reflected in the character of its founder, Brother Roger himself. Our prayers are very much with the whole community as well as the young people who had to witness the killing.”
Bishop Anthony and his wife Kathy met at Taizé in 1972 and have maintained strong links with the community. They have led groups of young people on visits to Taizé many times.
The Bishop of Worcester, the Rt Revd Dr Peter Selby, issued this statement:
“I heard with a deep sense of shock of the murder of Brother Roger during Evening Prayer. We have lost a remarkable pioneer of the modern day religious life and a brilliant evangelist especially to the young. What we have not lost is the continuing influence of the community he founded on thousands of people throughout the world who hear his message, experience the life of the Taizé community and sing its chants. He is one of the great figures of the contemporary church and as we grieve for him we commend him with confidence to the God whom he served.”
Bishop Anthony is available for interview. As Anni Holden is on annual leave please contact the Diocesan Communications Officer on 01905 454768.
