Honorary canons are distinct from the residentiary canons who are on the staff of the Cathedral. Honorary canons form a bridge between the diocese and the Cathedral and meet to reflect and advise on the life of the Cathedral. Honorary canonries in the Church of England are normally given by the diocesan Bishop to those who hold particular responsibilities in the diocese or to those who through their long experience can offer particular wisdom and insight about the diocese. Lay canons hold office for five years. Clergy remain canons whilst they serve in the diocese.
Speaking about the new appointments, the Bishop of Worcester said: ”I am delighted that all these people have accepted the invitation to be canons and will be able to continue their contribution to life in the diocese and in the college of canons and the Cathedral.”
