Department for Children, Youth and Education
The Board of Education
Chair - The Revd Canon Dr Stuart Currie
Education and work with children and young people have been strong themes throughout my ministry, lay and ordained. I was co-opted to the Worcester DBE when I moved into the Diocese some 17 years ago and have been chair from the beginning of 2006, having served previously as DBE vice chair and chair of the Schools Committee. In St Stephen's Worcester where I am vicar we have strong links between church and the schools and preschools: I am chair of governors at Northwick Manor Primary School. St Stephen's has a Junior Church with around 50 children on roll and two much smaller youth groups. Children and young people take leading roles in church; around 40 adults lead the work with children and young people. I am also chaplain to the Royal Grammar School, Worcester.
Before moving to Worcester I was a vicar in the Banbury Team Ministry (Oxford Diocese) where I held the education brief. I was also chair of the Schools Committee of the DBE, chair of Oxfordshire SACRE, coordinator of Adult Christian Education in the Oxford Archdeaconry, governor of Banbury School and chair of the Banbury Area RE Centre. A trained teacher, before ordination I taught Modern Languages in rural Derbyshire and inner-city London and had a year on supply in Bermondsey. I also spent two years in Zambia working in adult education, youth employment training and broadcasting.
