The Christian Faith Cross

At some points in our lives we find ourselves asking deep questions about our identity, our purpose and our mortality. The need for answers or at least pointers becomes urgent as we try to make sense of our lives, relationships and our work.

Baptism
Child being baptised © Marcus Parkins 2003

In baptism, you as parents are: thanking God for his gift of life, deciding to start your child on the journey of faith and asking for the Church's support.

For your child, baptism marks the start of a journey of faith, which involves turning away from the darkness of self-centredness, turning towards Christ and becoming a member of the local and worldwide Christian family.

Funerals A graveyard at sunset

A funeral marks the close of a human life on earth. It is the opportunity for friends and family to express their grief, to give thanks for the life which has now completed its journey in this world and to commend the person into God's keeping.

Becoming a Christian

Christians believe that every human being is made in the image of God and is loved deeply by God. We believe that each individual is of immeasurable worth despite our failings, our flaws and our inadequacies. We also believe that God has made us to know Him in a way that is amazingly fulfilling, liberating and challenging.

Confirmation confirmation

At a service of Confirmation people renew the baptism promises in a public profession of their faith; services of Confirmation will follow a course of instruction in what it means to be a Christian; so candidates will normally be at least 12 years old; although there is no upper age limit and the bishops are regularly confirming adults as people come to faith in Christ in later life. Confirmation is the service at which people become full members of the Church of England, and the bishop will lay hands on the candidates and pray that the Holy Spirit will come upon those who are to be confirmed. Confirmation marks the point at which a candidate might receive Holy Communion (the bread and wine).
